🥃 Deanston 18 Year Old
The oldest expression in the Deanston core range: 18 years in bourbon casks of American white oak, 46.3% ABV.
Deanston 18 Year Old is the oldest expression in the core range of the Deanston distillery. It is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky with a stated age of 18 years. Its strength is 46.3% ABV, like the other permanent expressions of the brand. The producer counts it in the core range along with the 12-year-old and Virgin Oak.
According to the producer, the whisky spends all 18 years in bourbon casks made from American white oak. The Scotch Noob, in a 2022 review, also mentions a separate version with a brown label that was finished in first-fill bourbon casks. It is bottled without chill filtration and without added colouring.
Why it matters to you. Compared with Deanston 12 Year Old, this one is aged much longer. The producer describes the taste as sweet and spicy, with gingerbread, manuka honey and white pepper. Deanston Virgin Oak is younger and finished in new casks. Versions of the 18-year-old have differed in their casks, so read the label. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

What to read next
- 🍷 Alcohol and health — Alcohol in any drink is harmful in large amounts, and the risks grow with the quantity.
- 🍷 Oak barrel — A wooden barrel of oak staves in which wine matures and breathes.
- 🥃 Barley and malt in whisky — Malted barley is the base of whisky: malt enzymes convert starch in the mash, and EU whisky is distilled below 94.8% vol.
- 🍷 Drunk driving — Never drive after drinking wine: alcohol slows your reactions.
- 🥃 Ex-bourbon barrel — American white oak cask of 180–200 litres used for bourbon: bourbon may only be aged in new charred casks, so used ones go to Scotch, Irish whiskey and rum.
