Protected region of Scotch whisky north of the legal Highland–Lowland boundary; the SWA’s 2024 map shows 55 distilleries here.

Highland whisky is Scotch distilled in the protected region of Highland, that is, in the part of Scotland lying north of the boundary between the Highland and Lowland regions. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 allow the name Highland on a label, packaging and in advertising only for genuine Scotch distilled in this region.

The law describes the boundary precisely: from the North Channel along the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, then to Cardross station, Earl’s Seat in the Campsie Hills and the Wallace Monument, along the B998 and A91 roads to Milnathort, the M90 motorway to Bridge of Earn, then the River Earn, the River Tay and the Firth of Tay to the North Sea.

According to the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), Highland is the largest Scotch region by area, and it also includes the islands. On its 2024 map there are 55 distilleries here, from Dalwhinnie and Glenmorangie to Talisker on Skye and Highland Park on Orkney. The technical file adds that Highland and the western islands get up to 4,577 mm of rain a year.

The SWA describes the region’s whiskies as rounded, robust in character and dry, with a light smoke. Near the sea they have a noticeable saltiness, in the far north heathery and spicy notes, and in the more sheltered eastern and central areas fruity ones.

Why this matters to you. “Highland” on a label guarantees only the place of distillation, not a particular taste: the region is very varied. The name is written directly before the category, for example “Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky”. The remaining rules are the same as for all Scotch: at least three years in oak, 40% ABV or more. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

Is it true that island whisky is a separate protected region?

No. The law recognises only five names: Campbeltown, Islay, Highland, Lowland and Speyside. The Scotch Whisky Association counts the islands as part of the Highland region; the only separate locality is Islay.

Where does the boundary between Highland and Lowland run?

Under regulation 10(7): from the North Channel along the Firth of Clyde to Greenock, through the Campsie Hills and the Wallace Monument, along the B998 and A91 roads, the M90 motorway and the River Earn to the Firth of Tay. The SWA shows it in simplified form as a line between Dundee and Greenock.

How many distilleries are there in Highland?

On the SWA’s 2024 map there are 55 malt distilleries in the Highland region. The map separately shows eight grain distilleries not assigned to any region.

What is Highland whisky like?

Very varied. The SWA describes it as rounded and dry, with a light smoke; salty near the sea, heathery and spicy in the north, and fruity in the east and centre.

Is Speyside part of Highland?

Legally, no: Speyside is a separate protected region, defined through the electoral wards of the Moray and Highland councils. Geographically, the SWA describes it as an area on the eastern side of the Highlands along the River Spey.
