🥣 Bowl

Tableware ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

Cereal with milk.

A bowl is a deep, round dish. Its bottom is shaped like part of a ball, so food gathers in the middle. This is handy for runny and loose foods: soup, porridge, cereal with milk.

Bowls are one of the oldest kinds of tableware. The oldest bowl ever found is about 18,000 years old. Bowls were made in ancient China, Greece and Crete, and by peoples of the Americas. They were shaped from clay, carved from wood or cast from metal. Today bowls are made of ceramics, glass, plastic and steel.

Today the bowl is the main dish for a cereal breakfast. You pour in the cereal and add cold milk. A bowl with high sides keeps the milk from spilling. People have eaten cold ready-made cereal this way since the late 19th century. Porridge, muesli and yogurt are also served in a bowl.
