🍽️ Plate
Milk porridge.
A plate is a flat or deep dish that people eat from. Soups and milk porridge are served in a deep plate, or soup plate. It has a deep middle and a wide rim. Such a plate is usually about 23 cm across.
Plates made of wood, clay and metal existed in ancient times. In medieval Europe, plates almost fell out of use. Instead, people ate from flat wooden boards or even from thick slices of bread. Plates came back into fashion at the French court in the 16th century. Today plates are made of porcelain, earthenware, ceramics, glass and metal. There are also disposable paper plates.
Milk porridge is easy to eat from a deep plate. The porridge does not cool so quickly in it. You can put a knob of butter in the middle, and the porridge at the edges cools faster, which is handy for children.
