🥃 Laphroaig Select
A Laphroaig line without an age statement, blended from several cask types with a finish in new American oak; 40% ABV according to Difford's Guide.
Laphroaig Select is a line of Laphroaig single malt whisky without an age statement. According to Difford's Guide, it was launched in May 2014 as a permanent part of the global range. The brand presents it as an introduction to Laphroaig's styles, and Difford's Guide gives its strength as 40% ABV.
Production. The whisky is blended from several cask types: according to Difford's Guide these are PX sherry hogsheads, small quarter casks and Triple Wood casks made from European oak. At the end a component of ten-year-old whisky is added, and the blend matures for six more months in new American oak casks. The brand says it selected the components from historic casks of different oak and style. The colour is golden amber, with no caramel colouring.
Why it matters to you. Select is less direct than the core ten-year-old: several maturation styles are combined here, so the smokiness comes with other notes. If age matters to you, remember that there is none on the label. Compare it with Quarter Cask and 10 Year Old. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
