🍇 Loureira

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

A fragrant white grape from north-western Iberia, used in Vinho Verde.

Loureira is a white aromatic grape from the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. The name comes from the Portuguese word for "laurel": the aroma of the wine recalls laurel leaves and flowers. In Portugal the grape is called Loureiro, in Spain Loureira.

It grows in Portugal, in the Vinho Verde zone, and in Spain, in Galicia, in the Rías Baixas area. These are damp, cool places beside the Atlantic. The vine likes such a climate and gives berries of bright acidity.

Wine from Loureira is light, fresh and very aromatic: flowers, laurel, citrus, peach. It is often blended with other local grapes, for example Albariño, and then the wine turns out fuller. In Vinho Verde it enters many white wines, adding floral notes.

Loureira belongs to Spanish and Portuguese wine and to the general list of grapes. It shows how in one cool region different grapes complement each other.
