📍 Rías Baixas

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

A coastal zone by the fjord-like rías, home of Albariño.

Rías Baixas is a wine appellation in north-western Spain, in Galicia, on the Atlantic coast. The name means “lower rías”, the rías being long narrow inlets that cut into the land. The climate is damp and cool, with frequent rain, so vineyards are trained high on pergolas to let the grapes air and suffer less disease. The soil is granite and sand.

The main grape is Albariño, a white with thin skins. It gives dry wines with scents of peach and citrus and a salty edge from the nearby ocean. Rías Baixas also grows Loureiro, Caíño Blanco and Treixadura. There are red wines too, including from Caíño Tinto, but whites make up most of the output.

The appellation has five subzones: Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla. Val do Salnés is the best known and the closest to the ocean.

For comparison with its neighbours: to the south across the Minho river lies Portugal, where the same grape is called Alvarinho and used for Vinho Verde, and to the east in Galicia lie Ribeiro, Ribeira Sacra and Valdeorras.
