📍 Galicia
The damp Atlantic north-west with white Albariño.
Galicia is a wine region in north-west Spain on the Atlantic coast. The climate is damp and cool, quite unlike the hot Spain of popular image. So the wines are fresh, with good acidity. The region belongs to Spanish wine. There are five main zones: Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, Valdeorras and Monterrei. The best known is Rías Baixas, where the white grape Albariño grows. It gives an aromatic wine with notes of peach, citrus and flowers that goes well with fish. Godello grows in Valdeorras and Treixadura in Ribeiro. Red grapes include Mencía, Caíño, Loureira Tinta, Sousão and others. Vines are often trained on high trellises so that air passes through the bunches and they do not rot from damp. In Ribeira Sacra the vineyards lie on steep terraces above the Miño and Sil rivers. Galicia is one of the few areas of Spain where white wine is considered the main one. The region's fish cooking is a natural partner to its wines.
