🥃 Malibu Original
The base coconut line of Malibu: a drink made from white rum and coconut flavouring, 21% ABV, not aged.
Malibu Original is the base coconut line of the Malibu brand: a drink made from white rum and coconut flavouring at 21% ABV. Difford's Guide describes it as a smooth, sweet coconut liqueur with no ageing. It is traditionally mixed in cocktails such as the piña colada and the daiquiri.
According to Pernod Ricard, the recipe is Caribbean rum made from molasses or cane, water, sugar and a flavouring with coconut extract. The rum is produced at a distillery on the beach in Barbados. The manufacturer gives 188 kcal and 18.1 g of sugar per 100 ml. Sources name the country of origin of the finished drink differently, so check the label on your bottle.
Why this matters to you. Original is the reference point for comparing the other lines: Black is stronger, and the fruit versions taste different at the same strength. At 21% ABV, with sugar, it does not replace rum in a recipe. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
