🍇 Chardonnay

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

One of the world's best-known white grapes, from Burgundy; the base of Chablis and many Champagnes.

Chardonnay is one of the best-known white grapes in the world. It comes from Burgundy in France. The grape arose from a cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, and its parents are known from genetic studies.

Chardonnay adapts easily to a place. In cool places, such as Chablis, the wines are fresh and mineral. In warm ones they are fuller and fruitier. A lot depends on the winemaker: some wines are aged in oak, some in steel.

Chardonnay makes both still and sparkling wines. It is the base of many Champagnes, including blanc de blancs. It is grown in Burgundy (Chablis, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Mâcon), in Champagne, and also in Italy, in particular in Franciacorta and Trento.

The grape has many descendants, among them Chardonel and Doral. It is on the list of the most widely planted grapes.
