🍷 Rosé

Wine from dark grapes kept briefly with their skins, so the colour is pale pink.

Rosé is a pink wine made from dark grapes left only briefly with their skins. Rosé is made from dark grapes. The skins stay in the juice only briefly, from a few hours to one or two days. In that time the juice picks up a little colour but does not turn red. Then the skins are removed and the juice ferments like a white wine.

There are other ways too. With the saignée method, some juice is bled off from a vat of future red wine. Blending finished white and red wine to make still rosé is not allowed in the EU; rosé Champagne is the exception.

Rosé is made almost everywhere. The best-known region is Provence in southern France. There are also rosés from Bandol, Tavel, Alsace, Austrian Styria and Cyprus. Common grapes are Grenache, Cinsaut, Syrah and Mourvèdre.

Most rosé is fresh and dry, with berry aromas. It is served chilled, often in summer. There are sparkling rosés as well, such as rosé crémant and rosé Champagne.

Frequently asked questions

How is rosé made?

Dark grapes are crushed and the juice is left on the skins for a few hours or up to two days. Once the colour is right, the juice is drawn off and fermented.

Can you mix white and red wine to make rosé?

For still wines this is banned in the EU. Rosé Champagne and some other sparkling wines are the exception.

Is rosé dry or sweet?

Most rosé is dry, especially from Provence. Off-dry and sweet rosés also exist.

⚠️ Wine contains alcohol: adults only, drink in moderation. Wine usually contains sulphites; egg white or milk proteins are sometimes used for fining — important for allergies and for vegans.
