A famous Médoc appellation with elegant red wines, home of Château Margaux.

Margaux is a famous appellation of the Médoc in Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde river in France. It is the home of Château Margaux. The name is protected as a PDO.

Margaux wines are red, still, elegant and fine. The main grape is Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot added. The soils here are gravelly and drain well. The vine roots go deep and the berries ripen evenly. Bordeaux wines are made as blends, so each estate has its own style.

The appellation has many well-known châteaux, some of which entered the 1855 classification. Margaux wines are usually prized for finesse rather than power and are aged for years and decades. They are served with meat, game and cheese. Margaux counts as French wine, and its neighbours in the Médoc include other famous appellations. For many wine lovers, Margaux has become a symbol of refined red Bordeaux.
