A Médoc village between Margaux and Pauillac with many famous châteaux.

Saint-Julien is a village and protected appellation in the Médoc, in Bordeaux, France. It lies between Margaux and Pauillac and is known for its many famous châteaux. The wine here is red and still, based on Cabernet Sauvignon.

The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure, tannin and a blackcurrant aroma, Merlot softness, Cabernet Franc freshness, and Petit Verdot colour and spice. The vineyards grow on gravel soils by the Gironde river. Gravel holds heat and drains water, which helps the late-ripening Cabernet. Saint-Julien wines are regarded as balanced: rich yet elegant, and they age well.

Saint-Julien belongs to the Médoc and to the wines of Bordeaux. It is served with lamb, beef, game and aged cheeses. The wine is expensive, and many châteaux are known around the world. It is best tried a few years after the harvest, when the tannins have softened. Like any alcohol, it is best drunk in moderation.
