📜 Haut-Médoc
The southern Médoc on the Gironde's left bank, home of many classified châteaux.
Haut-Médoc is a wine zone of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Gironde river. It is the southern part of the Médoc, the part closer to the city of Bordeaux. The name means "upper Médoc": the land lies upstream along the river.
The soils are gravel lying on clay and limestone. Gravel warms well and drains excess water, so Cabernet Sauvignon ripens superbly here. The wines are red and still. The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Haut-Médoc is known for many classified châteaux. As early as 1855 a famous classification was drawn up for Bordeaux, and several estates of this zone were included. Inside Haut-Médoc there are better-known communes with their own names, such as Margaux and Pauillac, but the appellation itself also covers quieter plots.
The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. It is tied to the Médoc as its wider territory.
