🍇 Morio-Muskat
An aromatic white grape bred in Germany in 1928.
Morio-Muskat is a white aromatic grape bred in Germany in 1928. It is a bred variety: it was created by a person crossing other vines, not found in nature. The name is linked with the surname of the breeder Peter Morio and with the bright Muscat note that is typical of it.
The variety descends from Silvaner, one of the old German white grapes. It ripens early, and the berries give a marked smell of Muscat, flowers and peach. Thanks to this the wines are light, aromatic and slightly sweetish, easy to drink young.
The grape was popular in Germany, especially in the Pfalz and Rheinhessen, where it was planted on fertile soils. It gave big crops and coped well with the weather. But over the years interest in it fell: winemakers began to prefer Riesling and other varieties of delicate flavour.
Morio-Muskat belongs to German wine and to the general list of grape varieties. It shows how, in the 20th century, Germany tried to breed a grape that was reliable and aromatic.
