π Silvaner
A white grape from Central Europe, known for the dry wines of Franconia and Alsace.
Silvaner is a white wine grape of Central Europe. Its homeland is Austria, but it is known mainly for dry wines from Germany and France. The main areas are Franconia, Rheinhessen and Nahe in Germany and Alsace in France. It also grows in South Tyrol. Silvaner gives calm wines with soft acidity and notes of green apple and herbs, often with an earthy shade. It is less aromatic than Riesling but conveys the character of the soil well. The best examples, for instance from WΓΌrzburger Stein-Berg in Franconia or from the Alsace grand cru Zotzenberg, age for many years. In Franconia, Silvaner wines are traditionally bottled in the flat Bocksbeutel. The grape is also a parent and relative of many others, such as Ostein, bred in Germany. Silvaner is served chilled with fish, white meat and asparagus, which Germans love in spring.
