🗺️ German wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
German wine is the wine of a country in the centre of Europe, famed for white wines with high acidity. The vineyards lie on the northern edge of the grape-growing zone, in the valleys of the Rhine, Mosel and other rivers, and often on steep slopes. The country belongs to the wines of Europe. Germany has 13 wine regions. They include the Mosel, Rheingau, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Nahe, Baden, Franconia, Württemberg, Ahr, Mittelrhein, Hessische Bergstrasse, Saale-Unstrut and Saxony. The main grape is Riesling, along with Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and the red Spätburgunder, that is Pinot Noir. Many varieties of its own have been bred: Dornfelder, Bacchus, Kerner, Acolon, and newer disease-resistant ones such as Solaris, Regent and Rondo. Wines are classified by ripeness of the berries and sugar content: Qualitätswein, Prädikatswein and others. There is also a country-wide category, Landwein, and a private VDP classification. Wines can range from dry to very sweet. German wine comes mostly in ordinary bottles, and in Franconia in the Bocksbeutel. Much of it is drunk within the country.
