🏷️ OFJ (Hungary)

Wine classification ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 2

Hungarian category for wine of a locality with loose rules.

OFJ is a Hungarian category of regional wine with loose rules. It stands for Oltalom alatt álló Földrajzi Jelzés, "protected geographical indication". In the European Union it corresponds to the PGI. OFJ wines stand next to the stricter designation of origin, OEM.

The category allows a wider area, more grapes and more freedom in production. Winemakers therefore choose it when a wine does not fit the strict rules of a narrow appellation. OFJ uses the names of Hungary's large regions, such as the Danube or Tisza area. The bottle shows both the grape and the vintage.

OFJ does not say whether a wine is bad or good. It only shows how strictly the origin is defined. Among OFJ wines there are good ones that cost little. This category belongs to Hungarian wine. It resembles Italian IGT and French IGP. To know what is inside, look at the producer and the grape.
