🏷️ OEM (Hungary)
A Hungarian wine category with a protected place of origin.
OEM is the Hungarian category of wine with a protected place of origin. The abbreviation stands for protected designation of origin. It is the same as PDO in the European Union, only in Hungarian. Hungary is an EU member, and its rules are aligned with the common ones.
This category covers wines from particular wine districts, such as Tokaj or Eger. Strict rules apply to such wines: the wine must be made from grapes grown in the named place, from permitted varieties and within set yield limits.
Next to it there is a second category, OFJ, protected geographical indication. It is the analogue of PGI. Its requirements are looser: the area is wider and the rules less strict.
If you see the letters OEM on a Hungarian bottle, the wine has the top level of name protection. It is not a guarantee of taste, but it speaks of origin and compliance with rules. Tokaj wine is the best-known example.
