Spanish regional wine with relaxed rules.

Vino de la Tierra is a Spanish category of regional wine. The name literally means "wine of the land". These wines name a certain area, but the rules are looser than for strict appellations such as DO.

Spain has several levels. Above are DO and stricter categories with clear borders and rules. Below are regional wines. In the European system the category corresponds to the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). This means the wine must come from the named area, but grape varieties and production methods are chosen more freely.

Thanks to this freedom a winery can use varieties not on the list for a DO, or try new methods. Many interesting wines appear in this category, since the producer is not bound by tight limits. Vino de la Tierra is part of Spanish wine, and the label names the locality, for example "Vino de la Tierra de Castilla". Below it in rank are wines without a geographical indication.
