🥃 Old Monk Amber
The oldest Old Monk line in catalogues: up to 20 years, 42.8% ABV, molasses rum.
Old Monk Amber is the oldest of the Old Monk lines we know of: according to RumX, a rum up to 20 years old at 42.8% ABV. Spirit Radar calls it Amber XO 20yo. The producer is Mohan Meakin in India; the base is molasses, distilled in a column still according to RumX.
The sources do not say which casks the rum matured in or how the blend is made. The phrase “up to 20 years” means the oldest component is at most twenty years old; the exact composition is unknown. The RumX tasting notes describe a sweet, liqueur-like flavour with vanilla, chocolate and coffee, but these are community ratings, not the producer's.
Why this matters to you. Amber is an older line than Gold Reserve, but the label may say “up to 20 years” rather than 20 years for all the contents. Read the wording carefully and compare it with Supreme and Gold Reserve. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
