A Ukrainian wine category with protected place of origin modelled on the EU.

Ukrainian PDO wine is a Ukrainian wine category with a protected place of origin. The abbreviation PDO stands for protected designation of origin. The system is modelled on the European Union: it says the wine was made from grapes grown in a certain area and by the rules of that area.

The basis is the Law of Ukraine "On Grapes and Grape Wine". It describes the categories of wine: wines with a protected designation of origin (PDO) and wines with a protected geographical indication (PGI). The former are tied to the place especially closely: grapes, varieties and methods are strictly described. The latter require a looser link.

For Ukrainian wine such a system matters, because the country has an old tradition of viticulture. Wine areas, such as Transcarpathia and Crimea, can receive their own names, as France and Italy did long ago. Crimea remains part of Ukraine.

PDO wine belongs to Ukrainian wine and to classification systems. For the buyer, the name on the label helps to understand where the wine comes from.
