🗺️ Ukrainian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Ukrainian wine is the wine of a country with long grape-growing traditions. Vines were grown even in the ancient Greek colonies on the Black Sea. Today the main wine areas are the Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, as well as Zakarpattia, Podillia, the Kyiv region and Crimea, which is part of Ukraine.
The country has many international and local varieties. Some were bred by Ukrainian breeders, notably at the Magarach institute in Crimea. They include Alibernet, Kefesia, Bastardo Magarachsky, Rubinovy Magaracha, Magarach 653, Rannii Magaracha and others. Historic Crimean varieties are Kokur Bely, Sary Pandas, Ekim Kara, Dzhevat Kara and Telti-Kuruk.
Styles are varied: dry and off-dry wines, sparkling, dessert, as well as Kagor and mulled wine. There are also everyday categories: ordinary, marochne and collection wine, home wine, young wine, and PDO wine. Ukrainian wine is counted among the wines of Europe and follows European principles of designation.
