📍 Zakarpattia
Hills at the foot of the Carpathians; since 2024 a protected geographical indication, "Zakarpattia".
Zakarpattia is the westernmost region of Ukraine. It lies at the foot of the Carpathians, on hills and foothills. Winemaking here goes back many centuries. Since 2024 the region has had a protected geographical indication, "Zakarpattia".
The centres of viticulture are Berehove, Vynohradiv, Mukachevo, Uzhhorod and Serednie. Summers are warm and the slopes heat up well. This helps the berries ripen and build aroma.
Growers plant local and Hungarian varieties as well as international ones: Furmint, Hárslevelű, Fetească Regală, Traminer, Welschriesling, Muscat Ottonel, Kadarka, Pinot Noir and Blaufränkisch. So the wines vary, from light whites to full reds.
Zakarpattia belongs to Ukrainian wine and shows that the country makes not only the steppe wines of the south but also wines of cool foothills, fresher in style.
