🥃 Craigellachie 17 Year Old
The middle expression of Craigellachie's core range: 17 years, released September 2014; 46% ABV.
Craigellachie 17 Year Old is the middle expression in the permanent range of Craigellachie distillery in Speyside. According to Difford's Guide, it was released in September 2014 together with the 13-, 19- and 23-year-old. Bacardi's 2023 press release names it among the core versions. Strength: 46% ABV.
Like the rest of the range, it is made from malted barley at a distillery with worm tubs. Sources differ on the casks: Difford's Guide writes about half sherry-seasoned casks and half ex-bourbon casks, while Whiskynotes mentions American oak. Difford's describes the taste as dried fruit, fruit cake, baked apple and liquorice.
Why this matters to you. The 17-year-old is a step between the 13- and the 23-year-old: the strength is the same, so the difference comes from age. The 19-year-old is a separate travel retail version, not part of the core range. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption.
