🥃 Aultmore 12 Year Old
The core Aultmore expression: 12 years, in the Last Great Malts series from John Dewar & Sons since 2014; 46% ABV.
Aultmore 12 Year Old is the core expression of the Aultmore distillery in Speyside. According to Difford's Guide, it was released in January 2014 in the Last Great Malts series, which John Dewar & Sons created for its malt distilleries. The strength is 46% ABV according to Difford's Guide and Whiskynotes. It is the youngest age in the range.
The whisky is made from barley malt; until then almost all of it went into Dewar's blends. According to SLTN, the 12-year-old and the 25-year-old were released together in ten markets around the world, including the UK. The source does not name the cask types. The 2014 Dewar's press release describes the whisky as grassy and links its water to the Foggie Moss bog.
Why this matters to you. Aultmore 18 Year Old has the same strength but six more years of maturation, so it is richer. If you want to taste the distillery's style without long maturation, start with the 12-year-old. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol is safe.
