🥃 Speyside whisky
Protected region of Scotch whisky along the River Spey; the SWA’s 2024 map shows 52 distilleries in a small area.
Speyside whisky is Scotch distilled in the protected region of Speyside in north-eastern Scotland, along the River Spey. Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, the name Speyside may be used on a label, packaging or in advertising only for genuine Scotch distilled within the region.
The boundaries are set by the electoral wards of 2006: eight wards of Moray Council — Buckie, Elgin City North, Elgin City South, Fochabers Lhanbryde, Forres, Heldon and Laich, Keith and Cullen, Speyside Glenlivet — and the Badenoch and Strathspey ward of Highland Council. The 2019 Scotch Whisky technical file repeats these boundaries.
According to the Scotch Whisky Association’s (SWA) 2024 map, Speyside has 52 distilleries; they include Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, The Macallan, Glen Grant, Aberlour and Cardhu. The SWA calls Speyside the whisky region with the highest density of distilleries in the world.
The SWA describes the local whiskies as elegant and complex, mostly with little peat and fruity notes: apple, pear, honey, vanilla and spice. They are often matured in sherry casks. According to the SWA, the water that runs through granite hills and peat bogs gives many malts a light smokiness.
Why this matters to you. “Speyside” on a label guarantees distillation in these nine wards, but not maturation in sherry casks — that is only a common practice. The region’s name stands directly before the category. The remaining rules are the same as for all Scotch: at least three years in oak, 40% ABV or more. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true that Speyside is part of the Highland region?
Legally, no. The Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 define Speyside as a separate protected region with its own boundaries. Geographically, the SWA describes it as an area on the eastern side of the Highlands along the River Spey.
What are the boundaries of the Speyside region?
Eight electoral wards of Moray Council, including Elgin City North and South, Forres, Buckie, Keith and Cullen and Speyside Glenlivet, plus the Badenoch and Strathspey ward of Highland Council — with the composition set in 2006.
How many distilleries are there in Speyside?
On the SWA’s 2024 map there are 52. Highland has 55 on the same map, but over a much larger area, which is why the SWA calls Speyside the whisky region with the highest density of distilleries in the world.
Are all Speyside whiskies matured in sherry casks?
No. The SWA says only that they are often matured in such casks. For any Scotch, the law allows new oak casks or casks that held wine, beer or other spirits, with certain exceptions.
Are there smoky Speyside whiskies?
Yes. The SWA describes the region as sparing with peat, but each distillery chooses its own level of peating, and water from peat bogs, according to the SWA, gives many whiskies a light smokiness.
