🥃 Aultmore 18 Year Old
Aultmore 18 Year Old, released in September 2015: no chill filtration and no caramel colouring; 46% ABV.
Aultmore 18 Year Old is the older expression of the Aultmore distillery in Speyside. According to Difford's Guide, it was released in September 2015, a year and a half after the 12-year-old, and it is bottled without chill filtration and without caramel colouring. The strength is 46% ABV. According to Whiskynotes, it was first sold mainly in duty-free shops.
Like the 12-year-old, the whisky is made from barley malt at a distillery owned by John Dewar & Sons, part of Bacardi. The source does not name the cask types. Difford's Guide describes the taste as pear, green apple, vanilla custard and salty oak; according to this description, oak and vanilla come through more strongly with water.
Why this matters to you. Compared with Aultmore 12 Year Old, the strength is the same, so the difference comes from the longer maturation. Check the age on the label: the 21- and 25-year-old are separate, rarer whiskies. The WHO reminds us that no level of alcohol is safe.
