🍇 Dattier de Beyrouth
A large-berried table grape from the Middle East; in Eastern Europe it is known as Bolgar.
Dattier de Beyrouth is a large-berried table grape from the Middle East. As the name suggests, it comes from Lebanon, from the Beirut area. In Eastern Europe it is known under the name Bolgar. Its berries are pale, golden-green, elongated, with firm flesh.
It is a table grape, not a wine grape: it is eaten fresh. The vine is valued for its handsome large bunches and sweet taste. It is rarely used for wine, however.
The variety took part in breeding: its trace is in the pedigrees of a number of other grapes, including Queen of the Vineyards, Yulski Biser and Victoria. It is also linked to Seibel hybrids such as Seibel 3011, 3015 and 4202. Pedigrees in breeding are often complex, and Dattier de Beyrouth served as one branch.
If you see the name Bolgar at a market, it may refer to this very grape. The variety likes warmth and tolerates hard frost poorly.
