🏷️ DOC (Portugal)

Wine classification ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

Portugal's highest category for wine from a defined area.

DOC Portugal is the top category of Portuguese wine from its own area. The abbreviation stands for "controlled designation of origin". The country has about 30 such designations, for example Douro and Vinho Verde. DOC matches the European protected designation of origin (PDO).

Each DOC has its own rules. They define the boundaries of the area, the grape varieties, yield, growing methods and ageing. Checks are carried out by special bodies, and a seal of authenticity is placed on the bottle. So the buyer knows the wine really comes from the stated place and was made by the rules.

Below it on the Portuguese scale stands Vinho Regional, wine from a large area with looser rules. DOC includes famous areas: Douro, where port comes from, Vinho Verde, Alentejo, Dão and others. It is the backbone of Portuguese wine. If the label carries the words Denominação de Origem Controlada, it is a sign that the wine passed control and has a clear origin.
