🗺️ Logistics planner
Also known as: logistician
Plans routes and schedules so the cold chain is never broken.
A logistics planner is a specialist who plans how goods travel from producer to buyer. A logistics planner works out how goods will get from the producer to the buyer. In the dairy industry, their main concerns are time and cold. Milk spoils quickly, so every delay on the road is costly.
The logistics planner draws up routes for the trucks. They decide which warehouse and which shop get the goods, and when. They keep an eye on stock so the warehouse is neither empty nor overloaded with short-dated products. Special software that tracks every batch helps them. The planner looks for ways to make delivery faster and cheaper and links the factory with suppliers and buyers.
The cold chain gets special attention. This is the name for an unbroken chain of chilled stages: storage, transport and sale. If milk warms up at even one stage, it may spoil before its date. The term “cold chain” itself was first used in 1908. The mobile refrigeration unit for trucks was invented by the American Frederick McKinley Jones; he got the patent in 1940. This opened the way for modern refrigerated trucks.
