📦 Warehouse worker
Also known as: storekeeper
Receives and dispatches goods at the warehouse and monitors the temperature.
A warehouse worker is a worker who receives, stores and issues goods at a warehouse. A warehouse worker receives goods into the warehouse, stores them and sends them out to shops. In a dairy warehouse, the work is done in the cold: the products are kept in cold rooms.
When goods arrive, the warehouse worker counts the boxes, checks the packaging and checks the paperwork. They record what came in and what went out. A handheld barcode scanner is often used for this. They keep an eye on the temperature in the cold room: if the fridge breaks, the goods must be saved quickly.
The main rule of the job is to send out first what came in first. This is called stock rotation. In English the rule is known as FIFO — “first in, first out.” Products with a nearer use-by date are placed closer and sent out first. Otherwise milk can go out of date right in the warehouse. The warehouse worker also picks orders, gathering the right goods for each shop. Then they help load them into refrigerated trucks. The job needs attention and care: one mistake, and a shop gets the wrong goods or a spoiled product.
