📍 Ionian Islands
The western islands of Greece.
The Ionian Islands are a group of islands off the west coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. They include Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Lefkada. The climate is mild, with warm summers and noticeable rain in winter, and the islands get plenty of sun.
Wine has been made on the islands for a long time, and each island has its own grapes. On Kefalonia grows Robola, a white variety that gives fresh wines with a mineral shade. On Zakynthos Verdea is known, and on the islands and on the mainland a sweet red wine is made from Mavrodaphne. Lefkada has its own wines as well.
Many vineyards lie on slopes by the sea and in the hills inside the islands. The Ionian Islands are part of the history of Greek wine, and these places are historically tied to the Venetian era. Island wines go well with fish and seafood. It is a distinct area of the country with its own character.
