A northern island with small vineyards.

Corfu (Kerkyra) is an island in the Ionian Sea in western Greece, off the coast of Albania. It is the northernmost of the large Ionian islands. The climate is mild and humid, with rain more frequent than in most of Greece, so the island is green. Vineyards are small and scattered on the slopes among olive groves.

Local grapes include the white Kakotrygis, which gives fresh, light wines with citrus aromas, as well as Petrokoritho. International varieties are also grown. The best-known plots are in the south of the island, around Halikounas, where small estates make the wine.

The island's wines are mostly drunk locally, so outside Greece they are almost unknown. The whites suit fish and seafood, the reds dishes with tomato sauce.

Corfu belongs to the Ionian Islands, a Greek wine region that also includes Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Winemaking traditions here are linked to the long period of Venetian rule. Corfu is popular with tourists, so many estates welcome visitors and offer tastings on site. The name Corfu on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
