🗺️ Greek wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grape varieties, appellations.
Greek wine is the wine of Greece. Winemaking here goes back to deep antiquity, and the country remains one of Europe's oldest wine lands.
Greece is divided into several wine areas: Macedonia, Thrace, Epirus, Thessaly, Central Greece and Attica, the Peloponnese, the Ionian Islands, the Aegean islands and Crete. Each area has its own grapes. Well-known whites include Assyrtiko, Moschofilero, Savatiano, Roditis, Malagousia and Vidiano. Reds include Agiorgitiko, Xinomavro, Mavrodaphne and Liatiko. Many of these grapes grow only in Greece.
Retsina, wine with pine resin from Attica, is well known. There are also sweet wines, for example from Muscat grapes. Greek wines belong to the wines of Europe but differ noticeably in style from French or Italian ones. The grape names are unfamiliar, but the wines show a link to sun and sea and to an ancient tradition of growing vines on the islands and the mainland.
