The Athens area, home of Retsina.

Central Greece and Attica is a historic wine area of Greece around Athens. It is the home of retsina, Greek wine with pine resin.

Vines grow on the hills and plains of Attica, Boeotia and the island of Euboea. The main grapes are Savatiano, which makes most of the whites and retsina, and Rhoditis. The area is part of Greek wine and brings together many small designations: Mesogeia in Attica, Megara, Anavyssos, Thebes, Parnassus, Gerania, Atalanti Valley, Opountia Lokridos, Slopes of Kithaironas and Penteli, Phthiotis, Karystos and others.

Retsina has long been made with resin of the Aleppo pine. The resin gives the wine a distinctive taste. Retsina of Attica, Euboea, Thebes, Boeotia and other places is protected as a traditional term. The area is known for its dry climate and a long winemaking history dating back to antiquity. Many wines of the area are drunk young and chilled, with appetisers and seafood of Greek cuisine.
