Jägermeister Original is the base line of the Jägermeister brand: a herbal liqueur made from a secret recipe with 56 herbs, flowers, roots and fruits. Its strength is 35% ABV. The producer says the formula has stayed unchanged for more than eighty years, and the taste is deliberately neither very sweet nor very citrusy.
How it is made. According to the producer, the plant ingredients are steeped for several weeks in a mixture of alcohol and water. The resulting macerates are combined into a dark base, which matures for about a year in large oak barrels in Wolfenbüttel. Before bottling, the base is adjusted with water, alcohol, caramel and liquid sugar.
Why this matters to you. All other products of the brand build on the same base, so Original is a convenient reference point: Manifest is stronger (38%), while Cold Brew Coffee and Orange are weaker (33%) and add a coffee or citrus flavour.
