🍇 Kratošija
A red grape of Montenegro, genetically the same as Zinfandel and Primitivo.
Kratošija is a red grape from Montenegro. Interestingly, it is genetically the same as California's Zinfandel and Italy's Primitivo. Genetic studies confirmed this. One and the same grape has different names in different countries. The home of this grape is in the Balkans, on the Adriatic coast.
In Montenegro, Kratošija is grown around Podgorica, on Lake Skadar and in Crmnica, as well as on the coast near Bar and Ulcinj. It also grows in North Macedonia, where it is known around Tikveš and the Povardarie area.
Wine from Kratošija is usually red and full-bodied, with notes of dark berries. It can be fairly strong. In Montenegro it is made on its own or blended with the local grape Vranac.
Thanks to this grape, Montenegro takes part in an important story in winemaking: the journey of a vine between continents. The name Kratošija is known mostly to specialists and people in the region.
