🗺️ Montenegrin wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.
Montenegrin wine comes from a small country in the Balkans on the Adriatic coast. Grapes are grown in several areas. The best known is the Lake Skadar basin near Podgorica. There are also wine districts on the coast and around Nikšić.
The country's main red grape is Vranac, dark and rich. The main white is Krstač. There is also the red Kratošija. These grapes are local, and many are rarely found outside the Balkans.
Montenegro belongs to the circle of European wines, and its output is small. Much of the grape harvest comes from large estates, but there are also family wineries.
The warm Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers suits red wines. Mountain areas give fresher wines. Montenegrin wine is still little known abroad, but interest in it is growing.
