🍇 Vranac
The main red grape of Montenegro and North Macedonia; it makes dense, dark wines.
Vranac is a red wine grape of the Balkans. It is regarded as the main red grape of Montenegro and North Macedonia. The name comes from "vran", meaning black stallion: a dark horse, and the grape has dark berries. Vranac grows best in the warm south. In Montenegro that means the Lake Skadar basin, the area around Podgorica and Crmnica. In North Macedonia it is Tikveš, and the grape is also grown in Herzegovina and Kosovo. The wines are full, dark, with high acidity and tannin and notes of dark berries. Genetically Vranac is related to Zinfandel, known in Italy as Primitivo, and to the variety Dulenga. This shows that it belongs to an ancient group of Adriatic and Balkan grapes. Vranac is more often drunk young, but the best wines can age several years in barrel and bottle. It serves as a base for blends and for varietal wines. It is often paired with meat dishes.
