📍 Madrid
Zones around the capital.
Madrid is a wine zone around the Spanish capital. Wines here are sold under the name Vinos de Madrid. The vineyards lie on hilly land to the south-west, south and east of the city, often at 600–900 metres above sea level. Summers are hot, winters are cool, and nights are noticeably cooler than days.
The zone has four subzones: Arganda, Navalcarnero, San Martín de Valdeiglesias and El Molar. Each has its own soils and style. The main red varieties are Tempranillo and Garnacha, and among whites Malvar and Albillo are well known. They give light, fresh reds, fuller reds and white wines.
The region has a long wine history, although interest in it has grown in recent decades. Madrid wines belong to Spanish wine as a whole and follow the Spanish rules on designation of origin. It is an example of a big city and vineyards living side by side, within a short drive.
