📍 Aragon
The homeland of Garnacha, on the plateaus of Cariñena and Borja.
Aragon is a historic region in north-eastern Spain, the home of Garnacha (Grenache in French). Vines are grown here on plateaus and in valleys, at several hundred metres, with hot summers and cold winters. Vineyards lie in the areas of Campo de Borja, Cariñena, Calatayud and Somontano, as well as several small zones.
Garnacha is the main grape of Aragon. Old bush vines give concentrated, aromatic red wines with soft tannins. Besides it, Tempranillo and Macabeo are grown, along with local varieties such as Vidadillo and Derechero, and international ones. The zones include Ribera del Gállego-Cinco Villas, Bajo Aragón, Ribera del Jiloca, Valdejalón, Valle del Cinca and Aylés.
Aragon belongs to Spanish wine and is seen as one of the most underrated regions. Wines from here are often cheaper than those from Rioja or Ribera del Duero, with good quality. Old vines more than 50 years old can be found here. In recent years interest in Aragonese wine has grown, especially in Garnacha from high-altitude vineyards.
