📍 Castilla-La Mancha

Wine region ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

A vast plateau, the largest vineyard area in the world.

Castilla-La Mancha is a huge plateau in central Spain. It is the largest vineyard area in the world: vines cover a large share of all Spanish vineyard land. The ground is flat, summers are hot and dry, and winters are cold.

The main areas are La Mancha, Valdepeñas and Manchuela. There are smaller ones too, such as Almansa, Uclés, Mondéjar and Méntrida. Many sites have appellation status, like Pago Florentino and Dominio de Valdepusa.

The most widespread variety is Airén, a white. In recent decades the share of red varieties has been growing, above all Tempranillo. Vines stand far apart because water is scarce, and the roots reach deep. The region used to be known for bulk wine; today more wines carry the name of a place. The region is part of Spanish wine as its largest piece. The plateau lies about 600–700 metres above sea level, and nights are noticeably cooler than days.
