🧑🔧 Maintenance engineer
Also known as: mechanical engineer
Services milking, cooling and plant equipment.
A maintenance engineer is a specialist who installs, adjusts and repairs machines and equipment. A maintenance engineer looks after machines. Modern milk is impossible without them: on the farm there are milking machines and cooling tanks, and at the plant there are pasteurizers, separators and filling lines.
The engineer's job is to keep the equipment from breaking down. They carry out planned checks, clean and oil parts, and replace worn ones. If a machine breaks, they find the cause, take it apart, repair it and test it. Simple jobs are often done by helpers, and complex repairs by experienced mechanics.
In dairy work, accuracy and cleanliness matter most. A milking machine must work properly, or it can injure the cow's teats, and dirty equipment leads to udder diseases. A pasteurizer at the plant is built like a stack of thin plates: hot water flows past some of them and milk past the ones next to them, so the milk heats up quickly. Then the milk passes through a special holding tube. If the temperature was not high enough, a special valve sends the milk back. The engineer makes sure this valve and the sensors work without fail. One breakdown can stop the whole workshop or spoil a large batch of milk.

Frequently asked questions
What does a maintenance engineer do at a dairy plant?
Services and repairs the equipment: pasteurizers, separators, filling lines and cooling units.
How does a milk pasteurizer work?
It is usually a plate heat exchanger: milk is heated between thin plates and held in a tube, and a valve sends back any milk that is not hot enough.
Why does a farm need a mechanic?
Milking machines and coolers must work accurately and cleanly, or the cows' health and the milk quality suffer.
