📜 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine
The main Muscadet area south-east of Nantes; the wines are often aged on their lees.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is the main zone of Muscadet wine in France, south-east of the city of Nantes in the Loire valley. The name is protected as a designation of origin (PDO). This zone gives most of all Muscadet wines. It is named after two small rivers, the Sèvre and the Maine. The wine is white, dry and still, made from a single grape, Melon de Bourgogne. The area lies close to the Atlantic Ocean, so the climate is mild and damp. The soils are poor, of gneiss and granite. The wine is light and fresh, with notes of lemon, salt and stone. It is often aged on the lees (in French "sur lie"). Dead yeast settles to the bottom and the wine stays with it for several months. This adds texture, a light prickle and notes of bread. The label says "sur lie". Muscadet is the classic wine for oysters and seafood, because it comes from near the sea and its taste suits them well. It is best drunk young and chilled.
