The long Loire Valley from the Atlantic to central France.

The Loire Valley is a long wine region along the longest river in France, from the Atlantic coast to the centre of the country. White, red, rosé and sparkling wines are made here.

The region is split into four parts: the Nantes area in the west (famous Muscadet from Melon de Bourgogne), Anjou-Saumur, Touraine and Central Loire (Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé from Sauvignon Blanc). The main grapes are Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Melon de Bourgogne. Many sparkling wines are made, such as crémant de Loire and Saumur.

Upstream the region also covers hills of central France: Côtes d'Auvergne, Côtes du Forez, Côte Roannaise and Saint-Pourçain. The climate there is cooler and wines are light.

The valley is known for its Renaissance châteaux. Its stretch between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes is a UNESCO World Heritage site (2000). Loire wines are light and fresh, and go well with fish, goat's cheese and local cooking. The name Loire Valley on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
