🍇 Muscat Ottonel
A white Muscat grape bred in France in 1839, giving aromatic wines.
Muscat Ottonel is a white Muscat grape variety. It was bred in France in 1839. Its parents are believed to be Chasselas and Muscat de Saumur (recorded as Muscat d'Eisenstadt).
The berries are small, with a light Muscat aroma: flowers, citrus and grapey notes. The wines are aromatic, usually light and fresh, often dry or off-dry, sometimes sweet.
The variety likes cool summers and does well in Central Europe. It is grown in Alsace in France, in Austria (Burgenland), Hungary, Romania (Murfatlar), Bulgaria (Pomorie, Danubian Plain), Moldova and Ukraine, for example in Zakarpattia.
Muscat Ottonel ripens early, so it suits regions with a short autumn.
