📍 Murfatlar
The country's sunniest wine area, near Constanța.
Murfatlar is a wine district in eastern Romania, in Dobruja, near Constanța and the Black Sea. It belongs to the Dobruja Hills zone. It is one of the sunniest and warmest zones in the country: summers are hot, winters mild, and the Black Sea softens the climate.
The local speciality is wine from late-harvested grapes. Murfatlar is known for sweet and off-dry whites from Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Muscat Ottonel, and for reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Fetească Neagră. A long warm summer and autumn let the berries gather sugar.
A research station and a large winery, founded in the mid-20th century, operate in the district. Vineyards lie on limestone and chernozem soils.
Murfatlar is part of the Dobruja Hills and of Romanian winemaking. Sweet Murfatlar wines go well with desserts and cheese, and the reds with meat. Murfatlar wines are often aged in barrels, and sweet late-harvest wines are drunk chilled. The name Murfatlar on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
