The northern plain along the Danube, home of Gamza.

The Danube Plain is a wine area in northern Bulgaria, along the southern bank of the Danube, from the Serbian border to Romania. It is part of Bulgarian winemaking, and the region holds protected geographical indication (PGI) status. The area includes the town of Svishtov and other wine centres: Vidin, Ruse, Pleven, Pavlikeni, Lovech, Suhindol and Lyaskovets.

The climate is moderately continental: cooler than in the south, with harsh winters and warm summers. The plain is flat or gently rolling, and the Danube softens the climate. Soils are chernozem, loess and limestone.

The area's key feature is the local red grape Gamza, which makes light reds with red-berry aromas. International grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon and Muscat Ottonel, among others.

Unlike the hot south of Bulgaria, wines here are fresher and lighter. Red, white and rosé wines are made, often simple and affordable. To the south lies the Balkan range (Stara Planina), and behind it the Thracian Lowland with a hotter climate. Light reds from Gamza are served slightly chilled with cured sausages, grilled meat and brined cheese.
