📍 Black Sea

The Black Sea region is a wine zone in eastern Bulgaria along the Black Sea coast. It is part of Bulgarian wine and has a protected geographical indication. In 1960 the country was officially divided into five wine regions, and the Black Sea became one of them. The region's towns include Varna, Pomorie, Shumen, Novi Pazar, Karnobat and Veliki Preslav.

The climate is maritime: autumn is long and mild, so grapes gather sugar and suit good white wines. That is why the region has the most white grapes in Bulgaria. They include Dimiat (a local white grape), Chardonnay, Traminer and Muscat Ottonel.

The region includes separate districts with their own names: Euxinograd, Karnobat, Novi Pazar, Sungurlare, Varna, Dragoevo, Khan Krum, Shumen, Veliki Preslav, Varbitsa, Slavyantsi, Southern Black Sea Coast and Dimyat. They are little known abroad, but separate wines are sometimes released under these names.

Pomorie is a seaside town linked with winemaking and with strong drinks made from grapes. The wines of the region are mostly white. The Black Sea region is one of Bulgaria's five wine regions, along with the Danubian Plain, the Rose Valley, the Thracian Lowland and the Struma River Valley.
